Student Legal Services (SLS) provides free legal services to currently registered University of Iowa students. Services are confidential and provided by licensed attorneys.

SLS advises and represents students on a variety of legal issues including, but not limited to, tenants’ rights, criminal defense, name changes, civil rights and discrimination, divorce, small claims, protective orders, contract review, expungement, traffic tickets, consumer rights, Department of Transportation, and powers of attorney.

SLS attorneys are bound by the Iowa Rules of Professional Conduct and cannot disclose student information to the University, parents, friends, etc. without express authorization. For more information about SLS confidentiality visit: https://studentlegal.uiowa.edu/about/confidentiality.

In addition to legal advice and representation, SLS provides the following:

  • Notarization of documents (available for students, faculty, and staff)
  • Mediation (including student-student conflicts)
  • Immigration Consultation Program
  • Referrals
